Herceg Novi is a city with a tradition of over six centuries. One of the youngest towns on the Adriatic, once was called Novi, Castrum Novum, Castel Nuovo .... Current name city got during the reign of Duke of St. Sava Herceg-Duke Stephen. Conquered by the Turks, shotly by the Spanish and by the Venetians, Austrians, Russians, then by the French, and from the 1814th until 1918. the city was under Austro-Hungarian authorities. Town history is noted for its numerous legends which are very interesting for the the local population as well as tourists who visit Herceg Novi.                                                                               

Herceg Novi is one of the few cities that is alive the whole year, thanks to the numerous cultural and sports activities that are traditional here. Herceg Novi is a city that lives at the sea, where more than 200 days a year the sun constantly shines on its squares, stairways and gardens. Herceg Novi is known as city of artists because many painters, sculptors and writers found the inspiration in it.                                   

City with its environment looks like a large botanical garden, full of mediterranean and exotic plants. It is built on solid rock, above the the seaside promenade, there is a door in the walls - a passage from the coast to the top of the fort. Kanli kula or "Bloody Tower", dates from the Ottoman period (sixteenth century), was a prison ( its name in Turkish means "Bloody Tower") and it is located in the old town. This is one of the most beautiful stage with over 1,000 seats. On the southern wall of the fort is so-called "Donkey Door" made by Austrians in the 19th century. Fortress Spanjola the local population called by this name because it was built by the Spanish in the short period of their reign where previously was small Turkish fortress. The clock tower or Sahat kula is located in the old city, and was built in 1850 by. Venetians rebuilt this tower and they called the Torah, so that today many people use that name. This tower is a distinctive sign of the old town and it is a special tourist attraction.        

City stairways - the streets of Herceg Novi are very common, so it is often called the city of stairs as well as many others on the Adriatic coast. Novi it is specific because some of these "streets"are very long stairways so therefore they are very exhausting for tourists and guests

The urban structure of the city Herceg Novi wears an unusual secret from the medieval way of of Spatial Planning Although this area has undergone several earthquakes, old town is is always renewed in the same way, on the same basis, and thus each stone has historic and cultural weight. A talented self-made builders and constructors kept their tradition of building houses till nowdays Therefore, the Herceg Novi is the city that should be visited and in the right way meet with it.
