Hrid Lake

Hrid Lake is one of the glacial lakes of Prokletije National Park, locally also called the Lake of Happiness. The road ends at Bajrovića katun, and from there it is a 45–60 minute walk through the forest. It suits a summer day out with a swim, if you don't mind a demanding drive to Bajrovića katun.

Why we recommend it

From our visit on 9 Aug 2025 · W2MNE team

In summer the walk up to Hrid Lake is unbelievably beautiful and pleasant: 45–60 minutes through the forest from Bajrovića katun. The lake is the reward. Even in August the water is cool and lovely for a swim, a real summer refresher.

The hard part is the drive. Bajrovića katun is as close as you can get by car, and the road there is very demanding. You can make it in an ordinary front-wheel-drive car, but it is a tiring drive, and many people won't want to take their own car up it. Our recommendation is a rented 4x4. Entry to the national park is 3 €. If you're spending a few days in Prokletije you'll go in several times, so the annual pass pays for itself.

What to skip or watch out for

  • The access road is very rough: an ordinary car can make it, but a 4x4 is the easier choice.
  • You can't drive to the lake. Leave the car at Bajrovića katun and walk 45–60 minutes.
  • Park entry is 3 € each time. If you'll be in Prokletije for several days, get the annual pass.
