Virpazar: first-hand guide

Virpazar is a small town on the shore of Lake Skadar, in Crmnica, in the municipality of Bar. The Belgrade–Bar railway runs through it, on the stretch between Podgorica and Bar. Many boat operators start their trips here, which makes Virpazar a good starting point for a cruise on Lake Skadar and on towards Rijeka Crnojevića.

What to see and do

  • A boat trip on Lake Skadar. Boats leave from the town itself, and some routes continue towards Rijeka Crnojevića.
  • Besac fortress, on the hill above the town, about ten minutes' walk up from Virpazar.
  • The Wine and Bleak Festival, held in recent years at the end of winter (February or March), with home-made Crmnica wines and ukljeva (bleak), a small fish from the lake.
