Visit Virpazar
Our day in Virpazar, built around the Wine and Bleak Festival, held every year at the end of winter (February or March) in the centre of the town. Besides the festival: Besac fortress with its restaurant and local wines, ten minutes' walk up from the town, and a coffee in Virpazar itself.

Why we recommend it
From our visit on 28 Feb 2026 · W2MNE team
Wine and Bleak Festival. We went on 28 February 2026, the first day of the 28th festival. Every year at the end of winter, the centre of Virpazar turns into a two-day festival of wine and ukljeva: winemakers from Crmnica and the rest of Montenegro present their young wines, and ukljeva (bleak), a small fish from Lake Skadar, is served with them. It's a chance to taste home-made Crmnica wines from the people who make them, together with tasty fish from the lake.
Besac fortress and the town. Above the town stands Besac fortress, about ten minutes' walk up from Virpazar. Inside the fortress is a restaurant that also sells wine from local producers; we tasted it, and a bottle costs between 10 and 20 €. In the town itself we had a coffee (2 €) and a lemonade at the renovated De'Andros hotel. Prices are fair, but they depend on where you buy and whether you are tasting for free at the festival.
What to skip or watch out for
- The festival date changes every year (in 2026: 28 February and 1 March), so check it before you go.
